Five of the seven species of sea turtles found worldwide live in the Maldives, and all five are at risk of extinction. ORP, a charity dedicated to protecting sea turtles and their habitats, focuses on rescue and rehabilitation, scientific research and education and outreach.

SiYtE, already in use for safeguarding UK railways by monitoring and alerting staff to risks, also detects hatchings and nesting activity. Our collaboration with ORP helps provide reliable hatchling counts and identifies nesting females, allowing for an accurate evaluation of nesting population size and productivity. Additionally, the technology enhances ORP’s sea turtle veterinary programme by assisting in the analysis of blood samples and monitoring sea turtle behaviour in rehabilitation.

From tracking nesting patterns to monitoring sea turtle populations and detecting potential human interference, SiYtE equips ORP with essential tools to gather vital information, protect sea turtles and intervene when necessary.

Gregory Butler, CEO of Purple Transform, said:

"At the heart of what we do is a commitment to creating better human outcomes. To achieve this, we leverage our tools, expertise, and passion to protect our planet – and this incredible species. SiYtE can easily be adapted - from protecting passengers and workers to safeguarding turtles, nesting sites and monitoring their environment for threats. Our partnership with ORP to safeguard sea turtles in the Maldives reflects our complete commitment to AI for good."

Dr. Martin Stelfox, founder and CEO of the Olive Ridley Project, added:

"Purple Transform leads the way with an innovative approach, harnessing AI to revolutionise standard camera devices into state-of-the-art monitoring systems. These systems can identify sea turtles, detect subtle behavioural changes in sea turtle patients and even pinpoint specific cell types. This advancement significantly enhances our capability to deliver prompt care and protection for sea turtles. Through this technology, we aim to establish improved monitoring systems and expedite the treatment and release of more sea turtles back into the wild."

We have partnered with the Olive Ridley Project (ORP) to support sea turtle conservation in the Maldives. Through Project SEUSS (Safeguarding Ecosystems Using Sustainable Solutions), our SiYtE platform is being utilised to monitor and aid in the conservation of sea turtles in innovative and unprecedented ways.
